If you do not spay and neuter your cats and dogs and they then have kittens or puppes , it adds to the already excessive pet population in North Carolina. Most kittens and puppies are unwanted and end up at municipal animal shelters where few are adopted and anything up to 95% of them are killed, THAT IS 95 OUT OF EVERY HUNDRED....often killed by inhumane methods such as heartstick or by gassing in a gas chamber.
The gassing method can take 45 minutes to kill an animal.
If your pets were spayed and neutered this would be less likely to happen. North Carolina’s best defense against all of the sources of shelter intake is targeted, aggressive, high-volume, high-quality, low-cost sterilization.

The Humane Society of Wilkes has a spay neuter assistance program to help residents of Wilkes County pay for spaying and neutering their pets. Fill in a form to request assistance. Return the form and you will receive a voucher that will entitle you to a reduced fee for your pet's surgery. Take your pet to your veterinarian for spaying or neutering and present the voucher. As our funds are limited, we can only issue 3 vouchers per household per calendar year. The amount is need based and depends on income.

The “Virginia Daniels Spay/Neuter Assistance Program” was established in 2006
to provide free spay/neuter and rabies shots, if the pet has not already been vaccinated,
for qualifying low-income residents of Yadkin County. Ms. Daniels earmarked these funds
for the new Animal Shelter as long as carbon monoxide gas was no longer used. As this
method is still the primary method for euthanizing the animals at the shelter, we have
followed her wishes that the funds be used for spay/neuter assistance.
Any Yadkin County resident whose income is less than 150% of the Federal Poverty
Guidelines qualifies for this program.
